For instance Karl Pilkington had his own travel show where he saw the seven wonders of the world, but this unique individual is famously not that keen on travelling abroad and is not exactly struck with awe and wonder, so his sharp observations made for great viewing.

His brand new DVD – An Idiot Abroad Series 2 DVD – is along the same lines except that this time he travels around the world ticking off a list of things that most people want to do before they die. Again it makes for a humorous travel-based show, and it moves away from the more serious travel documentaries. This show gets huge ratings for Sky and it has proved to be very popular so far.

So the point I want to get across is that travel documentaries have certainly moved on in the last couple of years or so. There is still room for your more traditional travel documentaries such as Joanna Lumley’s Greek odyssey, for example, but there also needs to be some shows that are less conventional than the others.
